Conan the Gingerian

(You might have to turn the volume up to really hear this)

Jay Leno's fans aren't going to like the new Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. No, probably not very much. David Letterman's fans couldn't stand Conan when he took over the Late Night spot back in '93, and I'd argue that Letterman's humor is closer to Conan's than Jay Leno's is. There are going to be some angry baby boomers expressing their disgust at the water cooler/Internet in the coming weeks, I can assure you. (For the record, I like Conan. A lot. If I were a stranger person, I'd probably have a poster of him hanging on my wall. Also, I almost made a mess when I heard Andy Richter exclaim "I'm Andy Richter!" on last night's show.)

But that's the way the cookie crumbles. The normal curve of Conan's fan-base, which has historically gathered around the "young hipster" region of the spectrum, is creeping further and further into the "middle aged hipster" region, while Leno's loyalists are probably finding themselves more and more concerned about the dangers of damn kids trampling their lawns. The two groups do have some common ground, though -- because darn it, they just can't stay up as late as they used to. It's hard enough making it to 10:30/11:30 at night, and it's just tough to find the justification anymore to maintain consciousness all the way through 11:30/12:30.

And who's this Jimmy Fallon punk who took over for Conan? No talent hack, I say! They just don't make comedians like they used to. He'll be booed off the air within six months, you just wait and see. Dagnabbit.

As for me, I put gouda on everything

I enjoy a good half hour of The Daily Show every now and then. Oh it's true, and I bet you didn't know that! It's almost as smart and witty as Scrubs. (Am I right, Michelle? Am I right?) And it is very good at keeping it real, which I can appreciate, because I'm a big fan of keepin' it real.

But enough with the small-talk; let's get down to business. The title of today's presentation is "Staying Grounded." Be sure to take notes, class, because there will be a quiz in the unforeseen future.

What's in a name?

I don't know how I didn't catch word of this last month, but apparently there was a big hubbub about a grocery store bakery in New Jersey that refused to make a birthday cake for a child.

Adolf Hitler Campbell. No joke. He has two siblings, too: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell. Indeed.

Recently, the kids were taken from their home by the Division of Youth and Family Services. I'd be interested to hear the reason, considering that in itself, giving a name is not reason to accuse parents of abuse. Except for little Honszlynn; there's no excuse for misspelling your child's namesake, even if it is Heinrich Himmler.

Of course, psychologists always have something to say about things like this. So says one: "Part of it is the infantile nature of the parents' behavior. You can name your dog something weird, but they think they're making some kind of bold statement with the children, not appreciating that the children will have separate lives and will be looked at in a negative light until they're able to change their name. It is abuse."

So are the parents hateful white supremacists? Do they simply have a deep obsession with dark irony? Or maybe they just didn't look closely enough at the title when they accidentally checked out 1001 Racist Baby Names from the library?

A lot of kids are doomed from birth because of their upbringing. Something tells me that if these three didn't have those crazy names to socially screw them over, their parents would find other ways to do it.

Obama

When was the last time that we've been able to watch people all around the country dance in the streets? Masses of genuinely happy and hopeful people? And it wasn't involving a sports team?

Whether you like Obama or not, you gotta admit that America's really been injected with something.

I'm watching a political analyst hold back tears on TV.

I know myself!

I took the "World's Smallest Political Quiz" today! It's supposed to be accurate and stuff.

I'm a left-leaning Centrist. Yup, that sounds about right. And it looks like I'm slightly more Libertarian than Statist. What's that...top-leaning?

So, how did everyone else line up?

How come no one ever endorses me?

So the news on Friday was that the Chicago Tribune has endorsed Obama for president. This is the first time that they've ever endorsed a Democrat, and only the third time that they've endorsed a non-Republican (Teddy "rough rider" Roosevelt was the last one in 1912). It looks like the Los Angeles Times threw their endorsement in too, and the last candidate that they officially gave a thumbs-up to was Nixon. Yowza. Who's next, the National Review? The world's gone topsy-turvy!

Yeah, I said "yowza." And yesss, I found this story while voluntarily reading foxnews.com. Don't get me wrong, I still rely entirely Comedy Central to give me all my news and analysis. Comedy Central can be fair or balanced, and I like that they keep it simple by shooting for only one at a time. I'd say that when it comes to news reporting, "fair and unbalanced" and "balanced and unfair" each have their own special merits.

Remember when Jon Stewart was interviewed by Bill O'Reilly, and Bill kept referring to the Daily Show audience as stoned slackers? That was fun.

It seems that a local doctor, who happens to be the director of Neuromedical/Neurosurgical Intensive Care at the University of Chicago, has a bit of a dark side: serial indecency. For supposedly being such a smart guy, he sure is an idiot.

The Daily Show

There was a fantastic interaction tonight between John Stewart and Bernard Goldberg on The Daily Show. I think it's so wonderful that conservatives have the guts to go on such an openly liberal (and, thankfully, intelligent) show to duke it out with Stewart. And while things often get pretty tense on occasion, Stewart can always find some sort of common ground and end the interview on a positive note. But really, he kind of has to do that, or else he risks becoming the exact person that he lampoons on regular basis. It's a joy to watch a smart "keepin' it real" guy do his thing like this.

Terrorists

So there's been some talk recently about domestic terrorists and their connection to the murders involving Judge Joan Lefkow's husband and mother. There are websites out there run by white supremacists heavily lauding the killings, and at the same time, Matthew Hale (the guy who has had a major grudge against Lefkow for quite a while now, and is currently in jail) called the murders "heinous" and has said that anyone who thinks that he is somehow involved with them is "an idiot." Well of course he didn't murder them himself, but I think it's pretty obvious that he could easily have an indirect connection to the crime. Does he expect us to believe that while all of his followers are giving high-fives, he's standing in front of them saying "Come on guys, stop it. Two people got murdered for goodness sake!" I doubt it.

But anyway, I enjoy the irony of the fact that most of these guys consider themselves to be at the pinnacle of patriotism, yet they're functionally the same as any foreign terrorist who would give his life to destroy this country.

I'm not usually one to be pessimistic about things, but I'm not feeling too hot about this election thing right now. Dare I say that I'm losing faith in the judgment of my fellow citizens?

Just a thought or two, re: politics

I wonder...do many politically-polarized folks ever come to the realization that it's impossible for either the left or the right to be correct all of the time? Do they know that there's this very distinct possibility that truths exist in both liberal and conservative thinking? Or that for any nation to sustain, it needs a healthy balance of influence from both sides?

Eh, probably not. I guess that's why they're polarized in the first place.
